1. Fundamentals of Redstone Wiring
Redstone is Minecraft's native electrical wiring system. Mined deep underground as Redstone Ore, Redstone Dust can be laid across blocks to transmit energy signals that trigger mechanical components such as Pistons, Sticky Pistons, Dispensers, Droppers, Redstone Lamps, and Hoppers.
Redstone signals travel up to 15 blocks in distance along a continuous dust line before decaying to signal strength 0. To transmit power beyond 15 blocks, builders utilize Redstone Repeaters to boost the signal back to maximum strength (15).

3. Building an Automated Sugarcane & Bamboo Harvester
Combine an Observer block positioned above a Sticky Piston at crop height. When the sugarcane block grows 3 blocks tall, the Observer lens detects the block update and emits a 1-tick Redstone pulse to the Piston behind it, harvesting the top two sugarcane blocks into a lower Hopper chest collection system automatically.
