1. The 20-Minute Survival Clock

Spawning into a new Minecraft survival seed presents an immediate challenge. You begin with an empty 27-slot inventory and zero armor or weapons. In Minecraft Survival Mode, a full day-night cycle lasts exactly 20 real-world minutes (10 minutes of daylight, 1.5 minutes of sunset, 7 minutes of night darkness, and 1.5 minutes of sunrise).

During the 7 minutes of nighttime darkness, light levels across the surface terrain drop below threshold 0, triggering the spawning of hostile mobs including Zombies, Skeletons, Creepers, Spiders, and Endermen. Establishing a secure base and crafting stone equipment before sunset is your single most important priority.

2. Minutes 0-3: Punching Wood & Crafting Table Assembly

Immediately scan your surroundings for nearby trees (Oak, Birch, Spruce, or Dark Oak). Hold down the action button to punch tree trunks and gather 6 to 8 Wood Logs. Open your character inventory grid and convert wood logs into Wooden Planks (1 log yields 4 planks). Place 4 planks into your 2x2 crafting square to assemble a Crafting Table (3x3 Grid).

3. Minutes 3-7: Wooden Pickaxe & Upgrading to Cobblestone

Place your Crafting Table on the ground. Craft 4 Wooden Sticks, then combine 3 Planks and 2 Sticks to create a Wooden Pickaxe. Do NOT waste wood crafting a full set of wooden tools (sword, shovel, axe), as wooden gear has extremely low durability (59 uses).

Instead, use your Wooden Pickaxe to mine 12 to 20 blocks of Cobblestone from nearby hillsides or stone outcrops. With Cobblestone in your inventory, return to your Crafting Table to construct upgraded stone equipment:

  • Stone Pickaxe: Required to mine Raw Iron, Coal, and Lapis Lazuli ores.
  • Stone Sword: Deals 6 points of attack damage to defeat early mobs.
  • Stone Axe: Speeds up timber harvesting significantly.
  • Furnace (8 Cobblestone): Used for cooking raw meats and smelting ores.

4. Minutes 7-12: Securing Food Supplies & Coal Torches

Sprinting and jumping deplete your hunger bar quickly. Hunt nearby pigs, cows, sheep, or chickens to gather raw porkchops, beef, mutton, or chicken. Place your Furnace down and fuel it using Coal or Charcoal (made by smelting raw logs in a furnace) to cook your meat for maximum hunger saturation restore.

Illumination & Mob Spawning Rules

Hostile mobs spawn in unlit areas where light level is 0. Combine 1 Coal/Charcoal with 1 Stick to craft 4 Torches. Place torches inside your shelter and around your perimeter to guarantee safety.

5. Minutes 12-16: Constructing Your First Shelter & Bed

Erect a simple 5x5 shelter using dirt, cobblestone, or wood planks. Ensure the shelter features a 2-block high doorway and ceiling. Craft a Wooden Door (6 planks yield 3 doors) to seal your entrance.

To skip nighttime darkness entirely and avoid fighting mobs, craft a Bed using 3 Wool blocks (harvested from sheep) and 3 Wooden Planks. Sleeping in a bed instantly resets your world spawn point to that bed location.
